A uniform panel, stretch movement zone and coated backpack body need separate material decisions. Record where a small cut or snag could develop, how the panel is supported and which finished assembly will be evaluated. A fabric tear result does not establish seam strength, abrasion life or the durability of a complete bag. Treat those as separate requirements where the design needs them. Before requesting prices, distinguish the mandatory tender clause from a preferred construction and from an open development target.

ISO 13937-1:2000 identifies the Elmendorf ballistic-pendulum method. ISO 13937-2:2000 uses a trouser-shaped specimen and a constant-rate-of-extension tensile-testing machine. Its scope is primarily woven fabrics; elastic fabrics, knits and some structures with unstable tear paths need particular attention to method applicability. The practical buying decision is to request like-for-like testing, rather than rank suppliers by whichever number looks higher. If the tender leaves the method open, ask the buyer and laboratory to agree it before sampling.

Check coated fabrics under the correct standard family

For rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics, ISO 4674-1:2016 distinguishes Method A, tongue tear, and Method B, trouser tear. ISO 4674-2:2021 covers a ballistic-pendulum route and explicitly states that its results cannot be compared with constant-rate-of-tear results. Therefore, “trouser tear” or “pendulum tear” alone is incomplete purchase language. For a bonded assembly, describe every layer and ask the laboratory which method is applicable. Obtain approval for any departure from the tender; a coating does not authorize a supplier to change the required test independently.

Compare construction routes without assuming a winner

NCR7/MOOOSO is an N/C ripstop uniform starting point; NS5/ROOORO introduces a nylon-spandex route whose stretch needs method review. K21/JUBODI combines a 650D ripstop base with a PU coating, while K12/JU6O6O uses a 500D Nylon 6.6 coated oxford construction. These are not interchangeable panel materials. Their published descriptions do not establish a tear ranking. Ask for the actual delivery finish, representative colour and approved construction when commissioning comparative tests.

  • Use composition, grid, weight and width to narrow the application fit.
  • Keep the coating or laminate attached when the approved method and delivered assembly require it.
  • Do not infer a passing tear result from a higher denier or a visible ripstop grid.

A useful draft clause reads: Finished article [model and finish], tested to [standard, edition and method], in [conditioning or specified pre-treatment], with results reported separately for [the method-defined directions], meeting [buyer-approved limits and result statistic], under [sampling and retest rules]. The brackets are decisions to complete, not default values. Ask the laboratory to explain direction labels so the direction of tear travel is not confused with the yarns being broken. Agree what happens if the required tear path or another validity condition cannot be achieved.

  • Identify the lot, sample location and reference approved for comparison.
  • State whether acceptance uses the method’s reported statistic and any additional buyer rule.
  • Record invalid tests, deviations and the agreed route for technical clarification.
  • List any required pre-treatment separately; do not invent a universal cycle count.
