Use ISO 15797 when the workwear is intended for industrial laundering and the selected procedure is suitable for the fabric, garment and real laundry route. Use ISO 6330 when the requirement is domestic washing and drying for textile testing. Do not approve a fabric from a temperature label such as ‘60°C’ alone. The purchase specification should name the procedure, washer and drying or finishing route, cycle count, specimen state, dimensional-change limit, appearance checks, retained performance requirements and final evidence. For industrially laundered workwear, compatibility with the intended real laundry process may also need confirmation before bulk approval.

Choose the laundering standard from the real service route

Begin with who will wash the finished garment and how. ISO 15797:2017 is intended for evaluating workwear, including some PPE garments where appropriate, that will be industrially laundered. It uses defined procedures to simulate industrial washing and drying or finishing, but it is not an operating manual for a commercial laundry. ISO 6330:2021 specifies domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing. A domestic procedure should not be used as evidence of industrial-laundry suitability merely because the water temperature looks similar. ISO also notes that final compatibility may need evaluation in the actual industrial equipment and process intended for the garment.

Specify the complete care cycle, not only 40°C or 60°C

Temperature is only one input. The buyer should identify the standard and edition, exact washing procedure, detergent, ballast or load condition where applicable, drying or tunnel-finishing route, and number of cycles before assessment. ISO 6330 states that a complete domestic test combines washing and drying, and that machine, detergent and dryer parameters can affect results. ISO 15797 likewise offers different washing and drying or finishing routes; not every route needs to be used. Select the procedure that represents the fabric composition, garment construction and intended service, then keep it constant across sample approval, supplier comparison and bulk verification.

Measure dimensional change with a controlled specimen method

Shrinkage should be written as a directional acceptance requirement, not as a general promise that the fabric is ‘pre-shrunk.’ ISO 3759:2011 covers preparation, marking and measurement of fabric specimens, garments and fabric assemblies used for dimensional-change testing. ISO 5077:2007 covers calculation of dimensional change after an appropriate specified washing and drying combination. State whether the result applies to fabric or finished garments, identify warp and weft or garment measurement points, define conditioning and relaxation, and set the maximum permitted change after the agreed cycle count. Mechanical pre-shrinking can reduce later change, but the finished route still needs measurement under the approved care procedure.

Evaluate appearance and retained function alongside dimensions

A dimensionally stable result does not prove that the workwear still looks or performs as required. Industrial-laundry evaluation can include colour characteristics, creasing, seam puckering, pilling and general visual appearance. The project may also need agreed checks for shade change, staining, surface finish, hand feel, stretch recovery, coating damage, bubbling, edge lift or delamination. For coated, bonded or laminated fabrics, record the construction-specific failure modes before testing and inspect them at agreed intervals. Any retained high-visibility, barrier, flame, antistatic or other protective claim must be verified under the test method and after-care state required by the governing product specification; it should not be inferred from the laundering procedure alone.

Match the material route to the care risk

Polyester/cotton twills, polyester mechanical-stretch fabrics, bonded softshells and three-layer laminates respond to heat, moisture, detergent, mechanical action and finishing in different ways. A woven workwear fabric may prioritize dimensional stability, colour and surface appearance. A bonded or laminated construction adds adhesive, membrane and layer-compatibility risks, so visual integrity and relevant physical properties should be assessed after care. Garment components, seams, reflective materials, labels, closures and trims can also set a lower care limit than the shell fabric. Approve the fabric and the finished garment as connected but separate control stages, and do not interpret a product model containing ‘60C’ as proof of an ISO 15797 procedure or a specific cycle life.

Use a supplier verification and release checklist

Ask the supplier for the exact specimen identity, production lot, care procedure, cycle count, laboratory responsibility and complete before-and-after results. Confirm whether the evidence covers fabric, seams, a prototype garment or the final product. For dimensional change, request the marked directions or measurement points and individual results, not only a pass statement. For laminates or bonds, require agreed photographs or ratings at inspection intervals and define what counts as delamination. Record any property retested after care and the method used. Does a 60°C product name prove that the fabric passes ISO 15797?

No. A temperature in a catalog model or product name is not a test report. Approval requires the exact ISO 15797 washing and drying or finishing procedure, cycle count, specimen state, acceptance criteria and traceable result required by the project.

Can ISO 6330 results be used for industrially laundered workwear?

ISO 6330 provides domestic washing and drying procedures. It can support a domestic-care requirement, but it should not be presented as evidence of industrial-laundry suitability. Use ISO 15797 or the project’s approved industrial-laundry route when that is the real service condition.

Which results should be checked after laundering?

At minimum, define dimensional change and visible appearance. Depending on the garment and construction, also assess colour, staining, pilling, creasing, seam puckering, stretch, coating or laminate integrity and any protective property that must remain after care.
